The office

4 on the schedule

A small studio, which is deliberate. Every job is held by a named architect from the first site visit to the post-occupancy visit a year after you move in — the same person, not a relay.

Dickson Nyame, Principal Architect at Milestone Architects

“The building is already in the site. Orientation, wind, the way people cross the plot — read those properly and the plan stops being a matter of taste.”

Founded the practice and still takes the first meeting on every job. Holds the parti — the one organising idea a scheme answers to — and is the person who decides when a concept is finished. Sets the position the office works from: that the architecture is the work, and that the construction arm exists to make it better rather than to replace it.

Who carries the job after that

“Everybody argues about the plan. The section is where the building is actually decided, and it is the drawing clients are shown last.”

Takes the parti and develops it into a coordinated building — grid, cores, floor-to-floor, the daylight depth of every room. Runs the section against the structural and services engineers until the three drawings agree, which is the point at which most of a project's cost is quietly settled.

“At 1:5 there is nowhere left to hide. Anything you leave unresolved on the sheet gets resolved on site, by whoever happens to be standing there.”

Owns the construction drawing set and the specification. Draws the junctions at 1:20 and 1:5, writes the schedules, reviews the shop drawings, and issues the instructions once the job is on site. The reason a Milestone set can be priced without a list of questions attached.

Position open

Project Architect

“A set is issued. A building is finished. Those are a year apart, and the second one is the only date that matters to the person living in it.”

The seat that carries a job from the first pour to the end of the defects period: site inspection, snagging, the as-built record, and the post-occupancy visit a year later that most offices never make. We are recruiting for it.

Every stage has a name against it.
